Networking: A Student’s Experience

Written by Gabriella Ishak and Andi Campisi

I attended the recent CampusLife event in the position of a young student attempting to enter the industry. The team at CampusLife made the first step easy and achievable. The night was targeted for young business students, similar to myself, hoping to make an easy transition into the workforce, encouraging them to make connections, build their network, and gain insight from industry professionals.

  1. The Environment

As I arrived at the venue - The Hive Collingwood (92 Rupert Street, Collingwood) - the CampusLife team greeted each guest, effortlessly demonstrating their compassion and dedication to supporting students. The Hive fostered a comfortable environment that motivated students and guests to have meaningful conversations. The daunting feeling of attending a networking event was eased as I was welcomed with catered food, wine from Benbow Estate, as well as Somma Seltzer. As I spoke to other students, I began to understand that all the students in the room were in a similar position as me: looking to build their connections and begin their career with a head start. Maybe exploring new avenues and stepping out of my comfort zone is not as scary as it seems, rather, opens new pathways and opportunities.

2. The Opportunities

We were joined by industry professionals, their guidance lifted the night and provided value to students entering the workforce themselves. Students like myself were engrossed by the story and history of La Cofradia Tequila, told by the founder himself, Edwin Reese. Edwin generously provided guests a taste of his high quality tequila delivered in unique and decorative bottles - there was always a crowd around Edwin! With upcoming internships available at CampusLife, each student sought after advice how to optimise their skillset. We were fortunate enough to hear from Glennis Winnett, the CEO and Founder of Formulite. Through the support of her two young marketing staff - Laura and Vish, we discovered innovative, stand-out ways to demonstrate your passion and skills to potential employers.

3. The Outcome

The team’s approach to guide students as they take their first step into networking included an exciting game of bingo! Tasks guided students as they courageously connected to new people and even had the opportunity to speak to Andrew Ford - the CEO and founder of CampusLife!

Notably, the interns' friendly disposition showcased the passion they have for their workplace, creating a welcoming, positive atmosphere at The Hive. Overall, the night was successful to meet new students and learn from those who are a part of the business environment. The Business Students Networking event was essential for taking my first step to network and join the industry - it was a bonus that I made new friends, had free drinks, and had a great night!
